Pre-Literacy Skills

Write Dance is an exciting music and dance approach to develop the skills needed for writing. Write Dance is an approach and a method that provides movement opportunities so children can develop the physical skills needed to develop their handwriting skills. The movement is driven by the music and the underlying principle is enjoyment to build confidence.

Dough disco involves moulding play dough in time to music and performing different actions such as rolling it into a ball, flattening it, putting each individual finger into the dough, rolling it into a sausage and squeezing it. The activities help to strengthen children’s fine motor muscles to enable them to develop their pencil grip which in turn will help to develop their writing skills. But most of all it’s fun!

Funky Fingers: Practitioners at Gill Blowers Nursery focus on handwriting in ‘funky fingers’ activities devised by early years expert Alistair Bryce Clegg. The children engage in a series of fun activities to build up the muscle dexterity needed for writing.  Handwriting is a skill that lasts a lifetime – and the learning of it teaches us so much more than just how to put words on paper.
