Our Curriculum

Our aim at Gill Blowers Nursery is to work together as a learning community; to encourage new ideas and experiences, allowing those in this community to grow and achieve their full potential in the future.

At Gill Blowers Nursery School the curriculum is designed to: recognise children’s prior learning at home, provide first hand learning experiences, allow the children to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience, and become creative, critical thinkers. Play is when true ‘learning’ happens when children are supported to become deeply absorbed, undirected and free to follow their own thinking and ideas. Active learning occurs when children follow their own thinking, to tinker, potter, explore, and be curious, creative and imaginative. We provide an environment that facilitates open ended exploration with no pre-set outcomes.

We have removed plastic toys from the classroom and replaced them with real resources and loose parts.

We aim to inspire enquiring minds to be scientists and engineers of the future. Through this broad and balanced curriculum we encourage children to question, explore, experiment, develop hypotheses and test them out, and to discuss what they are learning. Children leave Gill Blowers with a sense of belonging to a tightly knit community where they have the confidence and skills to make decisions, are self-assured communicators, make connections and become lifelong learners. At Gill Blowers Nursery we say that children learn through a hundred languages and, therefore, need flexible, reflective teachers who will listen to their needs and explore the possibilities. In nursery we spend time watching pupils to discover how they learn best. We recognise that this will continually change according to situation and context. Therefore, we expect teachers to present learning to children in variety of ways. This might be through the senses, by acting as role models, by aiding discussion, questioning, explaining and reflecting, to name a few.

Every child is recognised as a unique individual. We celebrate and welcome differences within our school community. The ability to learn is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values. We constantly provide enhancement opportunities to engage learning and believe that childhood should be a happy, investigative and enquiring time in our lives where there are no limits to curiosity and there is a thirst for new experiences and knowledge. Community and family involvement is an essential part of our curriculum as we celebrate local traditions, learning new skills and involving our parents /carers in their children’s learning journey.
